Spicy Snack Mix

Standard

Ever just want something for Thanksgiving just for you? When I get to wanting something like that I make a spicy snack mix. My sister-in-law has the recipe, but this is a sweet and spicy caramel topped treat that I love for the holidays. If you want to make it a tad more masculine I would suggest putting some beef jerky bits into it (seriously).

I think with this recipe, you either love it or hate it and I happen to love it!
Mix:
4 c. popped popcorn
3 c. Crispix cereal
1 c. cashews
3 c. tostido round chips
3 c. pretzels
2 c. multigrain Cheerios
Sauce:
1/2 c. light corn syrup
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 T chili powder
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. crushed cayenne pepper
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place all snack mix ingredients in a large pan (deep enough to be able to mix and stir sauce). In a pot, bring to a boil all of the sauce ingredients. Pour sauce over snack mix. Bake for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Pour onto parchment paper to cool; break up large pieces.
NOTE: I’ve added to this recipe from the original I received, which didn’t have cheerios or pretzels. I think you can do just about any combination of what you prefer, given that you use about the same measurements. I’ve also increased the cayenne pepper in my recipe because I like the extra kick!
By the way, a roaster pan is about the right size – they’re usually about $4 in the grocery store but you can find them at Menards for 2/$1.00. (And this is my money-saving tip of the week – it also helps with clean-up. You can consider it a bonus.)
